Transformation of the Logistics Sector in Spain

In 1984, a draft proposal emerged that anticipated the modernisation of the logistics sector. Led by Enrique Barón, the Directorate-General for Land Transport paved the way for the introduction, in 1987, of the Land Transport Regulation Act (LOTT). This milestone, combined with the implementation of the Organic Law on the Delegation of Transport Powers, established an innovative one-stop shop system, bringing an end to legislation that had been outdated since 1947.

Against this backdrop, logistics evolved from being a secondary function to becoming a key component of management committees, influencing stock control, operating costs and service levels.

The logistics sector in Spain, accounting for around 10% of GDP, has played a vital role thanks to the country's strategic location. It has also helped establish economic activity within local areas, creating high-quality jobs and attracting foreign investment.

The evolution of logistics over the past 25 years has been characterised by significant technological advances:

1. Digital Transformation: From the days of paper-based records to the implementation of ERP, WMS and TMS solutions, logistics has embraced digital transformation. Robotics and SaaS applications have redefined the possibilities and levels of connectivity within the sector.
2. Efficient Goods Handling: The transition from manual loading and unloading to palletisation has revolutionised operations. Concepts such as packaging pooling have saved time and reduced damage to goods.
3. Specialised Containers: The introduction of reefer containers, ISO tanks and flexitanks has facilitated international transport, improving the efficiency of global trade.
4. Tracking Technologies: From barcodes to radio-frequency identification (RFID), technology has improved control over goods and provided customers with greater visibility.
5. Warehouse Automation: Advances in materials-handling systems and robotics have enabled the creation of fully automated warehouses, paving the way for greater efficiency and lower costs.

Logistics in Spain has evolved from the introduction of the LOTT to the era of Logistics 4.0. Throughout this journey, continuous adaptation to new technologies and a commitment to sustainability remain crucial to maintaining a leading position on the global stage.
